Simple.簡 is my current favourite nasi lemak joint. It’s probably one of the few places offering butterfly pea-infused blue coconut rice. They offer unique side dishes like the prawn-paste fried chicken cutlet, creating a twist to this ubiquitous Malay dish.

Soi 19 is home to the famous Thai-style Wanton Noodles. Their springy egg noodles that’s flavoured with pork lard comes with a generous amount of char siew, Chinese sausages, fried wantons and the lot. It’s so good, it’s making me want to come back for more!

The Salted Plum is a fresh new face in the dining scene, and it’s really reminiscent of the now-defunct Five Ten. There were star dishes that costs either $10 or $15 like the Burnt Chilli Chicken, or the traditional hot favourite Braised Pork Belly. At such pocket-friendly prices, it’s an amazing place for both lunch and dinner.

Pho Thin is an unassuming pho outlet in Hanoi’s Old Quarters that sells the best pho there is. Unlike many other beef pho, the beef here tastes caramelised, garlicky and charred.

Jia Yuen Eating House is home to one of the best hawker-style salted egg buttermilk chicken. The crispy chicken cubes, drenched in salted egg cream sauce goodness, simply satisfies any salted egg cravings. The stall itself does not have any signboards or menu, and probably serves only one item.

Gyu Nami tops my “affordable and quality food for $10 and below” list with their only wagyu donburi. For only an impressive $10, you can get a quick fix of their appetising wagyu beef, done to a medium-rare perfection. It’s so good, it’s making me want to come for more each day.

Yi Dian Xin HK Dim Sum dishes out delicious dim sum at very affordable prices. If you’re looking for an alternative place for dim sum besides the usual Swee Choon and 126 Wen Dou Sha, look no further. They’ve got one of the best Liu Sha Bao (Salted Egg Custard Buns), Siew Mai and more. Located in Kovan, you don’t need to travel out to Jalan Besar to satisfy your cravings any longer.

Delicious Thai food that’s cheap? Certainly a few have sprung up in Singapore in recent years. Thai Gold Food itself had an authentic Thai vibe; with 90s-style street-side restaurant decor, and servers that communicate in Thai with one another. The food certainly is pretty authentic and tasty, and one that’s affordable.

After much hype from my Muslim friend, I decided to try this salted egg dish in Marsiling. Plus point? It’s halal. While I may be skeptical over the taste of some Halal tze char food, this dish certainly changed my view. It’s creamy. It’s bursting with flavour. It’s more than what I expected out of a salted egg chicken rice.
